Air conditioning grants, finance and 0% deals in 2026
What financial help is available for UK air conditioning installs in 2026 - grants, 0% finance deals, and what to watch out for.
The short answer: no direct government grants for domestic air conditioning in 2026. But there are three real ways to make the numbers work.
No, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not cover air con
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) gives £7,500 toward an air source heat pump that replaces your gas boiler. It covers whole-home heating systems. Domestic split system air conditioning is not eligible, no matter how well it heats.
Fitting an air source heat pump under BUS is a different job, different cost, and different install team. If you want that, we can help you find MCS-certified installers - but the enquiry runs through different channels.
Route 1 - Manufacturer 0% finance
Two of the major brands run 0% finance offers regularly in 2026:
- Daikin 0% over 24 months on units over £2,000. Available through their D1 accredited installer network.
- Panasonic 0% over 12 months, sometimes 24 months in summer promotions. Available through Panasonic Approved Installers.
The catch: the finance is administered by a third-party lender, subject to credit check, and the deposit is usually 25%. So a £2,500 install becomes £625 upfront and £78/month for 24 months.
Not free money but genuinely 0% interest. Useful if the cash-flow works for you.
Route 2 - Installer-arranged finance
Bigger installers often have their own finance partners. Rates in 2026 typically run 7 to 12% APR over three to five years. Not 0% but easier to qualify for than manufacturer finance.
Worth doing the maths. A £2,500 install at 10% APR over 3 years costs an extra £400. If that unit saves you £250 a year on your gas bill through cheaper heating, you break even in year two and profit every year after.
Two questions to ask the installer:
- Who is the actual lender? Some installers use household names, some use obscure providers. Ask.
- What is the total amount payable? Not just the monthly figure. The total.
Route 3 - Interest-free credit cards
The most flexible option most people miss. A 0% purchase credit card gives you 15 to 24 months of interest-free finance on the whole install cost.
Rough approach:
- Get a Section 75 protected 0% purchase card with enough limit (£3,000 to £5,000 depending on the install).
- Pay for the install on the card.
- Split the cost across the promotional period so you clear the balance before interest kicks in.
Advantages: no finance paperwork with the installer, Section 75 protection (the card company is jointly liable if anything goes wrong), full flexibility to overpay if cash flow allows.
Disadvantage: requires the credit score for a card with a big enough limit.
Local council grants
A handful of councils run home energy improvement grants in 2026. Most focus on insulation, heat pumps, or solar - air conditioning is rarely explicitly covered.
Two councils in the North West we know of run “cooling for vulnerable households” grants:
- Manchester City Council - up to £2,500 toward cooling for residents with medical conditions worsened by heat. Application via council website, letter from GP required.
- Trafford Council - similar scheme, up to £2,000.
Both are means-tested and require a medical case. Fair, but not for most households.
What to avoid
Three things to be cautious of:
- “Interest-free” finance with hidden fees. Read the paperwork. Look for arrangement fees or exit fees.
- Long-term finance over 5+ years. The unit lasts 12 to 15 years but interest compounds. Total payable balloons.
- Pay-later schemes from the installer with vague terms. Always get a written breakdown of exactly what you owe and when.
The most honest answer
For most households, saving up and paying cash beats every finance option. £2,500 saved over 12 months is £208 a month - roughly the same as the 0% finance monthly payment, but with no credit check and no lender in the middle.
If cash flow does not allow that, 0% manufacturer finance beats 0% purchase credit card, which beats installer-arranged finance.

Air conditioning vs infrared heating - which is cheaper to run
Infrared panels are the trendy electric heating option. Air conditioning on heat mode uses a third of the electricity for the same warmth. Here is the maths.
